The figures of the three young men seated at the chessboard are turned back to the viewer and seem to be cut into the interior. They are maximally close to the frame of the canvas, which makes the viewer an accomplice of the event depicted on the canvas. The geometrical planes of the interior, its repetitions, elements of cubic composition, in which the object environment is split into component parts and connected thanks to three figures in the foreground, turn a good-natured genre scene of a game of chess into a generalized and conventional situation. And at the same time the feeling of fragmentation and disharmony does not arise due to the general coloring - silver-gray tones, subtle accents of red, orange, the connection of all subjects, objects in the composition.
