The series “A Place That Doesn’t Exist” grew out of the photographs I took during various trips and journeys. Kakheti, Perugia, Almaty, Minsk, Baku, Konaev, Vitebsk, and a space somewhere between Naples and the islands surrounding it. When I took these photos, I had no idea that, over time, they would turn out to be connected. Later, as I developed my still-life practice, I intuitively began selecting some of these images to combine them with my “shadow” compositions. I was surprised that the locations never repeated themselves, yet the photographs gradually began to form small fictional territories—fragments of places that don’t exist on any map, but where, for some reason, I feel happy and at home. I combined these fragments using hand-cut collages, merging photographs from my travels with the still lifes I had created. For me, this project became a way to see how disparate impressions can gradually transform into an inner landscape.
