This work is part of a series of experiments exploring the legacy of photographer Lillian Bassman. As I studied her photographs, I wanted to return to color and imagine how her restrained black-and-white style might have transformed if she had opened Photoshop and started endlessly “twisting the curves.” In this series, candles in dresses take center stage. Their elongated forms evoke the contours of the human body (necks, arms, curves) while retaining the sacredness of a church candle. Beneath the outward decorativeness, aggression emerges: color becomes a way to speak of a woman’s anger, inner freedom, and creative energy.
